FROM THE CHAIR

Let's Continue to Build ASBA from Its Strengths
by Mark Heinlein, CFB

With ASBA coming off of strong recent gatherings at the Winter Meeting in Costa Rica; and the Regional Meeting in Baltimore, it feels like we’re poised for a good start to the year. Hopefully that momentum will carry over into our businesses for 2020! DETAILS

ASBA Action Alert: Treasury Issues Guidance on Small Business Loan Program

The U.S. Treasury issued guidance for the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) which provides $350 billion in loans for small businesses impacted by the Coronavirus. Small businesses and sole proprietorships can apply for loans through the PPP starting on April 3, while self-employed individuals and independent contractors can apply starting April 10.

Demand for these funds will be stiff.  We recommend you contact your accountants and lending institutions as soon as possible to prepare for application.

ASBA's Regional Meeting: Work Force Development, Education and Networking

ASBA’s Regional Meeting on March 5-6 had another strong showing of members in Baltimore, Maryland.  DETAILS

Winter Meeting 2020: Planning the Future

The 2020 Winter Meeting brought together committed members of the industry to advance the work of the association. The meeting was held February 21-23, in Costa Rica and was packed with work and fun.

The Board met to discuss strategic planning for the next year and each division and staff reported out on the progress made since the last meeting with memberships, financials and education initiatives. They also discussed future plans for the association.

Divisions gathered together to review the Technical Meeting surveys. With the information from the surveys, divisions worked to identify the 2020 Technical Meeting sessions and speakers. Each division went away with individual tasks and will continue their work throughout the year to bring quality sessions to the Technical Meeting in San Antonio, Texas this December 4-7, 2020. If you have an idea for a Technical Meeting session for 2020, please feel free to contact the division president or Kaylee Derby at kderby@ stringfellowgroup.net

Work also began on division education offerings. Some of the online development work includes a Tennis Court Construction: 101 that will engage new employees and teach some of the basics they need to know before going to the job sites. The Track division is working on an online version of the Certified Track Builder University, created by Sam Fisher. This will focus mainly on the math skills and formulas used by builders to “Build it Right.” Other development includes fields testing and project management skills. If you are interested in helping develop any of these online programs, please contact your division president or kderby@stringfellowgroup.net.

After the work was completed, attendees were able to take advantage of the beautiful coastline and jungles of Costa Rica on sightseeing tours, fishing expeditions and exploration. Members were able to rest and relax before the busy sports construction season.

If you missed the meeting, there are other ways to be involved and there is always next year’s meeting at the Marriott Cancun Resort in Mexico, February 19-21, 2021. More information will provided later this year.

Make Tracks for San Antonio in December

You’re heading into your busy season. Your work is cranking up. Soon, you will barely have time to think about anything else.

That means there’s still time to put ASBA’s 2020 Technical Meeting on your calendar.

The next ASBA Technical Meeting will be held December 4-7, 2020, in San Antonio, Texas. Our host hotel will be the Grand Hyatt at 600 E. Market Street.

All your favorite parts of the meeting will be back: the in-depth technical programming, an exhibit hall filled with the best products and services on the market, plenty of networking opportunities – even a chance to challenge your colleagues and co-workers on the golf course, tennis or pickleball courts. And you won’t want to miss the chance to find out about who won ASBA’s awards, and to hear a great keynote speaker.

Information on the meeting will be available later in 2020 – for now, mark the dates on your calendar and keep an eye on ASBA’s website, where information will be posted as soon as it’s available.

ASBA Awards Program is Now Open

And the nominees are … your project, if you decide to enter ASBA’s awards program. This year’s program is now accepting entries, meaning it’s time for you to nominate that project you want recognized.  DETAILS

Wanted: Experienced Builder!

Here’s an ASBA outreach opportunity for someone looking to contribute to the Association and to helping the industry reach its long-term goals!

What are we looking for? Your stories! How did you get into the industry? What drew you here? What got you interested and what keeps you coming back, season after season?

Why do we need your story? As part of our new career development program. In 2018, ASBA partnered with Cue Career to help bring a greater awareness of the sports construction industry to students all over the world. Cue Career provides the resources for students to explore careers by watching video interviews of people who work in the industry.

By working with many associations across the world, the organization also provides opportunities for workforce development such as internships, apprenticeships, mentorships, and more. To view the current ASBA Cue Career Videos, please visit https://sportsbuilders.org/page/careers.

ASBA is looking for a builder who would like to share their experiences in the sports construction industry, how they got to where they are now, what sparked their interest in the industry and how it has shaped their career.

If you are interested in sharing your story with students and others that may be thinking about a career in the sports construction industry, please contact Kaylee Derby at kderby@stringfellowgroup.net. It costs nothing to participate and we can work around your schedule.

Help us spread the good news!

ON THE BOOKSHELF

ASBA Technical Publications

ASBA’s technical publications, including popular and well-regarded Construction and Maintenance Manual series, are constantly being updated. We invite you to make sure you have the most updated issues. DETAILS

A New Fields Book is Coming - Make Sure Your're in It!

The new version is Sports Fields: A Construction & Maintenance Manual is on final approach. The only question is this: Will you be featured in it?

Advertising in this publication is the best way to make sure a great audience is aware of what your company has to offer. The fields book is read by more than just ASBA members (including builders, design professionals and suppliers); it is a must-have reference for colleges, parks and recreation departments, specifiers, coaches, athletic directors, field owners, municipalities, sportsplex managers, turf managers, groundskeepers and many others in the industry.

The fields book, one of the most popular publications offered by ASBA, is scheduled to go to print in late summer 2020 for distribution over a period of three years. This manual will be an invaluable resource to anyone planning, building, maintaining or even considering a natural grass or synthetic turf sports field. In fact, it’s a must-have!

Chapters include “Planning and Design,” “Choosing a Surface,” “The Construction Process,” “Synthetic Turf,” and “Natural Grass,” There also are sections on getting started on the project, and on sources of information, including trade associations, reference books and governing bodies. In addition, there is an entire section of updated drawings and diagrams.

The book, which is available in hard copy and pdf, is kept by its buyers, and turned to again and again. Your message will not only be seen but will be seen repeatedly. It’s not only available from ASBA; it’s sold on Amazon, giving your ad even more exposure.

High-visibility advertising positions are available, including inside covers, chapter dividers and in specific places throughout the book. If you’re interested, hurry! Prime spots are available on a first-come, first-served basis and they go quickly!

Certification: Make it Your Goal this Year

If you promised yourself that this was the year you’d pursue your CTCB, CFB or CTB certification, it’s time to start putting those wheels in motion.

All the information on certification is available on ASBA’s website, under the tab for “Certification” at the top of ASBA’s home page, www.sportsbuilders.org. Note that you must fill out all forms in advance in order to sit for the test, which is given at both ASBA’s Winter Meeting and Technical Meeting, as well as at other industry meetings throughout the year. The deadline for application is 30 days prior to each test.

You can take the exam by appointment at ASBA Headquarters in Maryland; simply work with the staff to find a convenient time.

A specific time for the exam will be listed as the date is closer.

INDUSTRY NEWS

The Big News: Clay Court Pickleball

Pickleball is popular with an older demographic because the smaller court is easier on the joints. What else is easy on the joints? Clay courts. And a racquet sports club pro in Baltimore has found a way to combine the two. DETAILS

ASBA Mobile App Available on iTunes, Google

ASBA now has its own mobile app (ASBA Diagram Showcase), available through the iTunes and Google stores, free of charge. The app contains a sampling of technical diagrams from our construction and maintenance manuals – including Tennis, Running Tracks, Sports Fields, Courts & Recreation and Pickleball.

The app is intended to be a resource when you’re on a job or in the field and need to reference a dimension or specification. It is not intended to be as comprehensive as our manuals – but rather, complementary to them.

Check out our app and send us your thoughts. We’d love to hear what you think.

ASBA's Position Papers: We Need Your Expertise!

And the nominees are … your project, if you decide to enter ASBA’s awards program. This year’s program is now accepting entries, meaning it’s time for you to nominate that project you want recognized.  DETAILS

Are You in the Know About ASBA's Certificate of Distinction Program?

ASBA currently offers two Certificates of Distinction, one for Design Professionals and one for Supplier Companies.

Both differ from certification in that they do not require members to pass a test, nor are they a credential that is awarded. However, they do recognize commitment and dedication to the Association and the industry.

The Design Professional Certificate of Distinction program provides professionals a distinction by illustrating the individual’s commitment and dedication to the tennis, track, fields and indoor facility construction industry through involvement with ASBA and related organizations and the completion of built projects.

The Supplier Certificate of Distinction program is designed to recognize those ASBA Supplier Division Member Companies that contribute to and share in the betterment of the ASBA. ASBA Supplier Division Member Companies that meet and/or exceed the participation goals and requirements will receive this recognition, which must be renewed on an annual basis and ASBA Supplier Division Member Companies must meet the minimum total qualifying point requirement every year to maintain their recognition.

To learn more about each Certificate of Distinction program, go to www.sportsbuilders.org.

May We Quote You?

One strong benefit of ASBA membership is the fact that ASBA is recognized as a technical leader in the industry. Want proof? Articles written on behalf of ASBA, and quoting ASBA members, are everywhere. Just as an example, you’ll find ASBA’s articles in the following publications:

  • Tennis Industry

  • PTR Tennis Pro

  • Sports Turf

  • Sportsfield Management

  • Athletic Management

  • U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Magazine, Techniques

In addition, ASBA has been contacted by other publications, including Athletic Business, when writers and editors are seeking an industry expert.

ASBA being recognized as an industry expert is outstanding, since that great reputation extends to our members as well. In addition, members’ participation in these articles can heighten their profile.

Want to see what ASBA has been up to? Head on over to the website, www.sportsbuilders.org, and click on the tab on the top that says “Press Room.” A drop-down menu will offer multiple choices including options such as Track Articles, Tennis Articles, Fields Articles and Indoor Articles. Click on the ones you want to view.

Want to be quoted in these articles in the future? Drop ASBA’s technical writer, Mary Helen Sprecher, a line at mhsprecher@gmail.com (note new address) and ask to be added to the list. Include any specific expertise you have, such as tennis, track, fields or indoor facilities.
