Astro Turf Corporation Announces Organizational Changes

AstroTurf®, the inventor and leading innovator of synthetic turf, is pleased to announce some impactful organizational changes effective immediately. Building on the momentum that has been created this year, AstroTurf® moves into 2020 with key personnel announcements that will help to create a better experience for AstroTurf® customers, shape corporate strategy, and contribute to the continuation of the rapid growth of the company.

To manage AstroTurf’s considerable growth in the western United States, AstroTurf’s current PacWest region will now be realigned into Northwest and Southwest regions. He is a thorough and exemplary sales presenter and has a great ability to mentor and coach teammates to new levels of success. He will be a great General Manager for the region.”

AstroTurf® is also pleased to announce Kim Summers as Director of Sales Analytics. Kim’s primary focus will be to provide the sales and marketing teams with analysis of bid results; provide sales reporting; and providing our regional sales teams with sales support. Commenting on the promotion, Rich Jordan said, “This opportunity brings Kim into a role that capitalizes on all her vast experience in manufacturing, estimating, systems management, product development, and marketing. In another move, Gary Jones has been named as the Director of Marketing for AstroTurf®. Gary was promoted from his previous role as Communications Manager for the company. Gary is a graduate of Auburn University and has over 25 years of sales and marketing experience with various types of businesses, products, and events. Collier Engineering Promotes Matt Campbell to Director of Design Operations


Collier Engineering is pleased to announce the promotion of Matt Campbell from Senior Construction Manager to Director of Design Operations. “Matt joined Collier in the spring of 2014 and has been a vital team member in our Construction Services Division”, said Chad A. Collier, P.E. and President of Collier Engineering. “Matt brings over 19 years of management experience to his new role. His experience and attention to detail in planning, organizing and managing governmental, and private projects positions him perfectly to serve our company and clients well as our company continues to grow.”

Rickerl Receives Apogee Award

Chris Rickerl was awarded the Apogee Award for his 20 years of exceptional achievement at Douglas Sports.

Chris started at Douglas Sports in 1999 and throughout his twenty years at Douglas he has served in many roles and capacities starting with Customer Service moving to Inside Sales Manager, Director of Procurement and now Vice President of Operations. Chris has been involved in all aspects of Douglas and his achievements throughout the organization has greatly impacted sales, purchasing and production.

Chris earned his Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from the University of Northern Iowa. He also played college baseball at Mount St. Clare College in Clinton, Iowa before transferring to Northern Iowa to finish his degree. He grew up in Clinton and currently lives there with his wife Stacy and three children.

Douglas Sports is grateful to Chris for all of his accomplishments and advancements he has made within the company. We wouldn't be where we are today without his dedication and hard work.



Frasure Earns Certification 

Bruce Frasure (Frasure Reps Sports Lighting) has recently become Lighting Certified (LC) by the National Council on Qualifications for Lighting Professions (NCQLP). This achievement recognizes a commitment to providing quality lighting solutions and energy savings through correct application of modern lighting technologies. As lighting industry standards get more rigorous, many organizations now require the NCQLP Certification for lighting professionals.


Gill Athletics Nears the Finish Line with Historic Hayward Field 

The NEW Hayward Field at the University of Oregon is nearing its finish as the finest track and field facility in the world. Gill Athletics, chosen to be the exclusive track and field equipment provider, has provided its 2019 ASBA Game Changer nominee Recessed Sand Catcher Cover LJ/TJ Forms, as well as innovative unique products such as Versa-Com Boxes, throwing circles/toeboards, steeplechase forms and barriers, as well as creative custom 70’ tall ball stop systems.

This April the University of Oregon will receive completely customized AGX pole vault and high jump pits, AGX PV/HJ standards, Continuum automatic hurdles, Fusion starting blocks and carts, custom distance and lane markers, as well as shot put return systems, implement carts, and so much more.

“We are humbled out of all the choices the University of Oregon track and field program has to purchase equipment from, they chose Gill Athletics,” said National Sales Manager Mike Cunningham. “It’s no small task to supply all of the equipment for the greatest track facility in the world, I’m so proud of our team from fabricators to designers who have worked so diligently to produce the greatest track and field equipment in the world!”

The University of Oregon will host the Pac-12 Championships with their brand new equipment in May as well as the USA Olympic Trials in June. Along the way they will be competing exclusively on Gill Athletics track and field equipment at each of their indoor and outdoor NCAA championships as Gill is the exclusive NCAA championship equipment provider.



Har-Tru Announces Associate Moves

National Coach Dustin Taylor joins company. Promotions for Tracy Lynch, Brandy Gentry

Har-Tru, LLC announced this week the addition of former USTA National Coach, Dustin Taylor, and the promotion of two of its longtime associates, Tracy Lynch and Brandy Gentry. The moves support the company’s short- and long-term goals, particularly its expansion into the hard-court coatings market.

Taylor Steps in as Business Development Manager

Taylor comes to Har-Tru fresh off the ATP World Tour as a lead National coach for the USTA. At the 2019 US Open, he oversaw a select group of top American men on the ATP tour, most notably Denis Kudla and Tim Smyczek. Prior to his role as a lead National coach, Dustin was the Associate Head Coach at the University of Virginia where, under he and Head Coach Brian Boland, the team won three consecutive NCAA Championships.

“Dustin is an incredible addition for Har-Tru and will greatly enhance our ability to serve the high-performance customer, such universities and tennis academies,” said Pat Hanssen, Har-Tru’s President. “He understands their needs better than anyone I have ever met, and he is very driven to help others be successful.”

Taylor grew up in Portland, OR and played tennis on scholarship at the University of Tulsa. There he was a division I All-American and NCAA quarterfinalist and Farnsworth senior player of the year before graduating from the business school in 2005. He and his wife Jennie, have four children: Mckenzie (8), Brooklyn (6), Tatum (4), and Decker (2) and reside in Charlottesville, VA. Taylor said, “I want to sincerely thank Har-Tru for the opportunity to be part of one of the most respected companies in the tennis industry.”

Lynch Promoted to Vice President of Sales & Marketing

Tracy Lynch has been with Har-Tru for 21 years, and during his time with the company he has served in a variety of sales and leadership roles. Most recently, he served as Har-Tru’s Director of Sales. Last year he led the launch of Har-Tru Sports Coatings, the first major product line launch for the company in the last 25 years. He also participated in the development and coordination of company marketing activities. As VP of Sales & Marketing, Lynch will continue to develop and lead the business strategy to allow Har-Tru to become a top player in hard court coatings while retaining its leadership role in clay courts, tennis court equipment and accessories. He will also be charged with transforming the company’s sales and marketing organization with the focus on customers, specifically how to leverage the company’s knowledge, experience, and one-stop shop to best serve their needs.

Gentry Promoted to Marketing Manager


Brandy Gentry is in her 13th year with Har-Tru. She began her career with the company in an administrative role before branching into marketing and business systems administration. Discovering a passion for marketing, Gentry began to pursue her college degree and three years ago became the company’s Marketing Coordinator, where she dove into all aspects of the marketing activities. She led the design and build of Har-Tru’s online store and, as store manager, she has grown sales ten-fold in the last 3 years. As Marketing Manager, Gentry will guide the company’s brand strategy and marketing activities, run the online store, and assist with Har-Tru’s international initiatives.

Hanssen stated, “I am incredibly pleased for Tracy and Brandy. They work extremely hard and have a track record of identifying and acting on ways to add value for customers, associates, business partners and vendors. I am also excited for the company, because having the two of them in positions that directly guide and influence strategy and business initiatives will be critical for us as Har-Tru enters a period of rapid growth.”

Har-Tru Expands into Acrylic Sports Coatings 

Har Tru’s newest manufacturing expansion into acrylic sports coatings in 2019 went even better than imagined. Having existing relationships with many well established and well respected tennis court contractors was instrumental in our success. With Har Tru’s surface offerings now including soft and hard court options (an industry first) we were a great fit for contractors who install both types of surfaces. Being able to ship trucks loaded with Har Tru clay products, Har Tru Sports Coatings, and even some accessories and tools made for very economical and convenient deliveries. For 2019, we partnered with 24 contractors installing Har Tru Sports Coatings from Southern California to Canada, Florida to Maine, as far south as Costa Rica and many courts in between. Har Tru Sports Coatings were applied to both asphalt and concrete courts and include tennis, basketball, and pickleball facilities.

Our timely and precise color matching process also helped several contractors with a variety of challenging projects that included nine different custom colors. Har Tru sports Coatings was also used for such high level play as the NCAA Regionals at the University of Virginia and professional qualifier at the Boars Head Resort. We are very excited for 2020 as we continue adding new products to include cushion systems, flexible coatings, and a crack repair system. We are also very proud to announce that along with our existing professional events Har Tru Sports Coatings will also be the official court surface of World Team Tennis for 2020. As we move into the new year we will continue to strive to supply the best products and service to our industry to help create better places to play. We are looking forward to another great year and want to thank ASBA and all the members for their support!

Har-Tru Consulting Partners with Tennis Facilities in the U.S. and Canada


Har-Tru Consulting is partnering with several tennis facilities in the US and Canada including the Toronto Cricket, Curling, & Skating Club in Toronto. Wayne Sills, Director of Facilities said the club “strives to provide best in class facilities for all member activities. Har-Tru Consulting works with our staff on a quarterly basis to ensure we are using best practices to provide a world-class tennis facility”. In addition to facility consulting, Har-Tru hosted seminars for tennis facilities in Vancouver and Toronto.

In the US, Har-Tru Consulting worked with a number of facilities to provide consulting services for more than 50 tennis courts in FL, LA, ME, NC, , NJ, NY, SC, & WA, including Torcon Construction Management Services and Princeton University. A one-day Har-Tru University seminar will be held at the upcoming Professional Tennis Registry International Symposium in Hilton Head in February 2020.

Our goal is to create a roadmap that will allow a court owner or facility to offer the best tennis court experience possible over the long-run,” says Ed Montecalvo, who has over 20 years of experience with Har-Tru. “The services we create include recommendations for short and long-term capital budgeting for the entire court infrastructure”. Pro-Play Converts "Green Asphalt" to a Quality Multi-Purpose Field

The non-profit organization Asphalt Green in New York is dedicated to assisting individuals of all ages and backgrounds to achieve a healthy lifestyle through sports and fitness. Good quality infrastructure is a requirement, but the old, hardened artificial turf field in Manhattan could no longer live up to these expectations. A new surface was installed and the ProPlay shock pad certainly has made a difference.

New York is better known as ‘The Big Apple’. However, maintaining a healthy lifestyle is a big challenge for most citizens. This is especially true for those living in and around Manhattan, where most of New York’s commercial activity is concentrated. This area in particular is the reason why New York is considered to be ‘the capital of the Western world’. The flip side of this role is that most citizens rush from meeting to meeting and job to job to make ends meet. The top of their agenda lists many things but sports often doesn’t enter such a list. Through facilitating sports, Asphalt Green tries to make a difference.

Community service is at the core of the origin and still the heart of its mission. The organization is also committed to becoming New York City’s leading football club that is recognized as an elite program regionally and nationally. They estimate that they will ensure that more than 50,000 public school children will stay active in 2019.

Quality product for quality installation

In 2017 Asphalt Green contracted with Net Sports Group to replace the artificial turf field at the Upper East Campus. A GreenFields Ironturf woven artificial turf carpet was selected and the decision was made to compliment the turf with a ProPlay shock pad. The recognition for shock pads is gaining momentum now with sports federations and researchers, who increasingly recognise the value of a shock pad to maintain the quality of a field and provide safety to athletes. As this field had been featured in a ‘Top 9 NYC’s worst football fields’ listing previously, the decision to add a shock pad to the new field received a warm welcome by New York’s football fraternity.

ProPlay is one of the very few shock pads that has been used for close to 30 years. Schmitz Foam Products, the manufacturer of ProPlay, warrants all of their shock pads for 25 years.

Allen Hubbard, National Sales Manager of Schmitz Foam Products comments; “This latest field for Asphalt Green is one of numerous ProPlay installations in the greater Manhattan area. This is due to the tremendous value that this shock pad represents, enabling the field to be used for an extreme amount of hours annually in all weather conditions while still providing a very safe and consistent sports surface.”

Not influenced by the weather

The new 8,100 sqm. artificial turf field is not affected by the kind of rainfall New York experiences. Despite the city having an above average rainfall compared to the rest of the country (119.30 cm compared to the national average of 96.50 cm per annum nationally) the field at Asphalt Green drains quickly. ProPlay is produced from polyethylene foam. The material has a closed cell structure preventing the shock pad from absorbing moisture.. Water, be it from rain or melting snow, flows directly through the pad towards the drainage system underneath. Thanks to the new field Asphalt Green is now able to continue running its programs during rain or in winter. The Upper East Side campus attracts over 2 million visits annually and those using the field do so for competitive and recreational football games, free community sports leagues and events, flag football, and summer camps.

Easy installation

Many New Yorkers know too well the meaning of ‘time is money’. The replacement of the synthetic turf at Asphalt Green was no different. However, the use of ProPlay helped NET Sports to replace the field rapidly. ProPlay sheets are easy to handle and install quickly due to their interlocking puzzle tile shape. The quality of the pad also reduces the need for extensive base remediation, making the replacement of any synthetic turf field much more efficient in terms of both time and money.

With the field completed, all that is left is the official FIFA recognition. An accredited laboratory will now have to determine the quality of the installation and validate the performance of the field. Testing its performance in terms of shock absorption and energy restitution will merely be an administrative recognition. The quality standards and testing at the Schmitz Foam Products plants in Roermond, the Netherlands, and Coldwater, Michigan, dictate that the quality of the shock pad is verified every 250 m² (2700 ft²) which results in 30 random spots on a field. That is almost double the number of spots compared to the 19 FIFA dictates.

Asphalt Green Executive Director Maggy Siegel is elated with the installation. "We are thrilled for the community to experience our new, state-of-the-art turf field. The overhaul of our athletic field with Ironturf technology elevates the levels of our competitive, recreational, and free community programs," she said while discussing this installation. "We are proud to be at the forefront of providing the latest technology and highest safety standards in the industry." It is an offering that residents in Manhattan will certainly value and appreciate.


Sportsfield Specialties' Equipment Innovations Receive Industry Accolades

Sportsfield Specialties Inc. is no stranger to innovation. In fact, the U.S.-based athletic field equipment manufacturer has over 25 patents under their name and show no signs of slowing down.

On December 8, Sportsfield was recognized for their contributions to the advancement of athletic equipment at the American Sports Builders Association’s (ASBA) Technical Meeting Awards Ceremony in Orlando, Florida. The winning designs included the company’s new Tension Netting System with Integrated Wall Pad Backstop (fields division) and their new Retractable Long / Triple Jump Sand Pit Cover (track division).

“It’s a great honor to be recognized by the ASBA community for our work,” said David Moxley, Director of Sports Construction Sales at Sportsfield. Sportsfield’s Tension Netting System with Integrated Wall Pad Backstop accomplishes both. The systems, which combine components of a standard safety netting system and wall pad backstop into a single unit, are designed to streamline installation and ultimately lowers the cost for contractors. Once installed, end-users at multi-team venues benefit from the ease of swapping out custom logo pads. “These benefits are achieved without compromising a professional-looking aesthetic and design professionals still have creative flexibility,” Moxley added.

Likewise, Sportsfield’s Retractable Sand Pit Covers are easy to operate and install. A built-in mechanism allows end users to retract a vinyl cover manually with a removable crank. Moxley explained that the new design eliminates bulky weighted sand pit covers and replaces them with a lighter solid or mesh vinyl cover that can be removed, stored, and replaced with a heavy-duty aluminum cover in the off season.

Safeshell Natural Infill Installed at Hallandale Beach's Peter Bluesten Park


As a part of the city-wide initiative to beautify the city of Hallandale Beach and to create a safe atmosphere for the community to engage in healthy activities, the Parks and Recreation Department recently designed and opened Peter Bluesten Park, a sports and recreation facility for public use. While the facilities are already enjoyed widely by the local community, locals may not know that the planning team faced several unique challenges when designing the outdoor synthetic turf soccer field at Peter Bluesten Park. It was determined in the beginning stages of planning that the field would need to withstand intense rain showers and hot temperatures typical of Hallandale Beach, a coastal town in southern Florida.

In their research, the planning team determined that turf infill selection was a critical factor in building a synthetic turf field that could successfully cope with extreme weather conditions. After carefully reviewing the turf infill products on the market, Safeshell was selected and favored by the Hallandale Beach Parks and Recreation Department for its ability to withstand frequent rain, reduce surface temperatures, and for its unparalleled health and safety benefits.
