Track and field may be one of the oldest sports in the world, but that doesn't mean it's staying static. And although it's no secret that the granular surfaces such as cinder, fired clay and expanded shale have been left in the dust, it's easy to lose sight of what really is new in facilities these days.

According to Sam Fisher of Fisher Tracks in Boone, Iowa, the arms race to have the best and newest sports venues is showing no signs of slowing down - at both the high school and college levels.

One of the great advantages of sports is they bring people together. Let’s face it—it’s just plain fun to catch up with friends, whether watching kids in Little League or finishing a great game of pickleball or tennis and wanting to unwind and talk.

In other words, the social experience is its own part of the game. If your park regularly hosts sports (for adults or youth), one of the best ways to drive engagement is to play up the enjoyable aspects of the experience.

to have a track & field facility that wows athletes and spectators. What you need is a facility that is
well-built and, just as importantly, well-maintained.

A facility that gets regular care and maintenance should offer years of service. To maximize the useful life of a track regardless of the type of surface, the owner should develop and implement a regular schedule of maintenance. That may sound daunting but all it really involves are three things already at your disposal: Both feet, both eyes, your phone (for taking pictures only) – and your attention.

Has Your Facility Gotten Off Track?

Your and field teams are shredding their warm-ups and getting ready for the season. The question, however, is whether your track is ready for them,

Here are a few symptoms that it might not be:

Surfacing has come loose in areas, leaving bare spots, skinned or pitted sections
Granules of surfacing material are scattered across the track
Visible cracking of the surface (either in specific areas or throughout the facility)
Drainage problems; standing water in any place on the surface
Track surface looks uneven or wavy in spot; lane lines may also look wavy or crooked
Delamination: The process of the top layer of the track separating from the underlayment. This may appear as a small bubble or it may present as long, wavy lines covering the surface.
Discoloration of the surface
Field even areas of looking worn or in need of improvement.
