About the Fields Division
ASBA represents companies actively engaged in the building of synthetic and natural grass sports fields. The Association also represents designers of such fields and suppliers of related materials. A majority of field builders also install tracks and
synthetic track surfaces as part of a project scope of work.
The Association was founded in 1965 as the US Tennis Court & Track Builders Association (USTC&TBA) by a group of
contractors who recognized the need for an organization that could help them address their mutual problems, set industry standards and keep them informed on issues pertinent to their business. Its name was changed to American
Sports Builders Association in 2004 to incorporate the addition of both natural grass and synthetic turf fields reflecting the expanded range of work performed by its members.
The purpose of this book is to promote the quality construction, maintenance and repair of sports fields by providing information to facility owners, administrators, coaches, builders, architects and engineers. Since no two projects are alike, in most
cases, this book cannot provide definitive answers. Rather, it is designed to explain the choices and the rationales behind various options. This will allow the owner or his representative to ask important questions
and to make reasoned decisions. Asking questions not only is smart, it is essential. The investment of time and energy in learning about sports fields can yield a huge return in terms of a quality facility and generate
a better return on the investment in a field. The ASBA is committed to providing information to assist facility owners and managers in making informed choices in order to promote the construction of quality facilities.
Become a Certified Field Builder The Certified Field Builder Program was developed by the ASBA to help raise professional standards and to improve the practice of field construction. ASBA certified builders must pass a comprehensive exam on field construction and maintenance. They must fulfill prescribed standards of experience and demonstrate a high level of expertise in field construction.
