The purpose of this book is to promote quality planning, design, construction, maintenance and repair of track facilities by providing information to owners, administrators, coaches, builders, architects and engineers. The word “track” as used in this book refers to the running track oval and to the related field events.
Since no two track projects are exactly the same, this book cannot provide all the answers. Rather, it is intended to explain the terminology, geometry, amenities, design options and the rationale for various choices. In other words, it helps interested parties better understand the important questions to ask as they prepare to make decisions on their track facility projects.
Asking questions is not only smart, it is essential. The investment of time and energy in learning about track facilities can yield a huge return in their quality and in the enjoyment that will be derived from them. The American Sports Builders Association is committed to providing information to assist owners and users in making informed choices that promote the construction of quality track facilities.
Given this objective, this book is largely directed at the high school and college markets, where ASBA members do most of their work. Design and construction considerations for tracks at higher levels (tracks constructed for international competition, for example) are addressed by the Track and Field Facilities Manual, published by the International Association of Athletics Federations. See Appendix B in Chapter 10 for contact information.
Chapter 10 contains a number of appendices meant to provide additional resources for information, calculations, specifications and other useful materials for those involved in constructing track facilities. The rules are constantly under review by the governing bodies and are subject to change. Please consult the appropriate governing body’s latest rule book. The end of the manual also features a glossary of terms commonly used in the course of designing and building a track.
In some cases, the track calculations and measurements noted during a project will be metric and in other cases imperial. Calculations and construction may be performed either in metric or in imperial as long as appropriate tolerances are achieved. Throughout this book, measurements are expressed in either metric or imperial, depending on the most common use.
The drawings and technical information in this book are intended to provide clarification of the design and construction concepts discussed in the text. They are meant to represent generic solutions, typical of those used in the design and construction of tracks. Each drawing represents only a single option to address the needs described in the text. In every case, there are other ways to achieve the design intent. In addition, readers of this book are cautioned that site conditions can vary widely. Local climates, subsurface geotechnical conditions, construction methods, availability of materials and site engineering requirements
make the development of universal construction details virtually impossible. While every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of the drawings, ASBA is not responsible for any errors or omissions.
The recommendations in this book are suggestions for architects, engineers, contractors and owners. Except where they refer to the rules of track, these guidelines provide only options, explanations or illustrations of typical generic solutions to construction issues. Parties not experienced in track construction are advised to consult a Certified Track Builder, a qualified contractor or a design professional. Due to the differences in design intent, local regulatory requirements, climate and construction sites, each project is different. ASBA makes no representations regarding the suitability of a particular design or decision as it
relates to a specific project.
