“Roundtable Webinar: Facility Upgrades During COVID-19” will be presented on Wednesday, February 24 at 2 p.m. Eastern. It is intended to guide the sports facility owner, manager and administrator when it comes to facility maintenance and upgrades.

ASBA will be presenting the webinar in cooperation with Coach & Athletic Director Magazine. The webinar will be presented as a panel discussion to review the trends in facility upgrades during the time of COVID-19. Also presented will be recommendations on how to keep facilities running properly with potentially limited budgets.

The book will replace the former publication, Indoor Sports Surfaces: An Installation and Maintenance Manual; it will have more robust content, covering a wide range of sports facilities (those not covered in ASBA's existing tennis, track, fields or pickleball books).

The book will include segments on facilities for three categories of sports:

• Hardscapes/Outdoor Courts: Includes sports like outdoor basketball, platform tennis, outdoor racquetball, horseshoe pits, etc.
• Indoor Court and Gym Sports: Sports played indoors on acrylic or wood surfacing, such as basketball, squash, team handball, volleyball, etc.
• Sand/Beach Court and Field Sports: Beach volleyball, beach soccer, beach tennis, beach Ultimate, etc.

Each segment of the book will include information on design considerations, surface construction, surface specifics, lining courts and fields of play, etc., including specific details if design and construction will differ by sport.

Additionally, each segment of the book will include sport-specific information, including a diagram of the field of play (showing dimensions) as well as contact information for the national and international governing bodies of that sport. For example, a diagram of a badminton court would include contact information for USA Badminton as well as for the Badminton World Federation.

Volunteers Needed

At this time, ASBA is actively seeking volunteers to assist with this book. We welcome volunteers from all divisions. If you have specific expertise or knowledge in design or construction of any of the listed types sports facilities/venues/courts/fields and would like to help in the inaugural ASBA Courts & Rec Manual, please let us know.

We’re also looking for assistance with producing or providing information for chapters on lighting, accessories and amenities.

Here are the facilities that were announced as those that will host competition.

Legion Field will host the World Games Flag Football competition. The stadium, a historic property with a capacity of 71,594, opened in 1927 and is currently home turf for University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Birmingham Blazers football team. The playing surface is synthetic turf.

Boutwell Auditorium, a 5,000-seat indoor arena that was built in 1924 as Birmingham's Municipal Auditorium, will be used to host martial arts competition. Martial arts contested at the World Games are sumo, kickboxing and Muay Thai, sometimes known as Thai boxing or Thai Kickboxing.

Birmingham CrossPlex, a 750,000 square foot multi-sport complex, will host inline hockey, artistic roller skating, indoor and outdoor speed skating, wheelchair rugby, lifesaving, finswimming (Google it here) and canoe polo (Google that one too). Fun fact: The CrossPlex, with its hydraulically banked track, was a winner of one of ASBA’s awards several years back.

Protective Stadium is currently under construction and is scheduled to be completed in 2021. It has been announced as the setting for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the World Games 2022. Once it is back in use, it will host the UAB Blue Blazers.

According to the World Games 2022 website, a total of 24 competition venues will be used. The renovation of the Birmingham Jefferson Civic Complex will also be completed by the time of the Games. TWG 2022 will also have the Sloss Furnaces Park for use as a competition venue. The Railroad Park in the heart of the city is the start and finish of Duathlon and Orienteering competitions. In the concert hall of the Jefferson Civic Complex, the powerlifting competition will be staged.

Additionally, renovations of the Legacy Arena, expected to host gymnastics and dance, are scheduled to be completed in April 2022.

The World Games, first held in 1981, are an international multi-sport event meant for sports, disciplines and events not contested in the Olympic Games.

And, as it turns out, there are opportunities for design professionals, contractors and suppliers, as a result.

Practice area renovations have become the most popular type of project for golf course architects, according to the 2021 Golf Facility Market Trend Watch report, commissioned by the American Society of Golf Course Architects (ASGCA) and conducted by Sports & Leisure Research Group (SLRG).

An article in Golf Course Architecture notes that here has been a 13 percent spike in practice area projects among architects, while there have also been increases in bunker projects, greens renovations, tee box redesigns and projects to add forward tees. In fact, total redesigns, new course construction and re-bunkering are the greatest revenue drivers, unseating master plan development (the previous holder of the top spot.

Additionally, the article points out, interest in golf course renovations among public facilities is also at a four-year high, with the report highlighting a seven percent jump over the last two years. Statistics relating to public facility respondents also show increases in a few other areas, including a 12 percent rise in those interested in expanded junior programs, a nine percent increase in facilities interested in nine-hole golf, and a 20 percent spike in interest regarding couples events.

The National Golf Foundation had recorded rounds in November, for example, being 57 percent ahead of last year, with the industry pacing ahead at least 13 percent. Since June, the surges in play have yielded almost 70 million incremental rounds compared to a year ago. For the year 2020 as a whole, the net gain was almost 57 million extra rounds over 2019, when 441 million rounds of golf were played at the nation’s more than 16,000 golf courses.

And all those rounds are adding up to a lot of wear on courses, and nowhere is it felt as much as on practice areas. The Market Trend Watch study clearly illustrates an increased need for on-course maintenance programs at both public and private courses, according to golf course superintendents and general managers.

Operators at both public and private facilities show a willingness to invest capital if it will improve the overall financial picture. The goal to “Increase Revenue” outpaced “Decrease Costs” by more than 5 to 1.

Unfortunately, the majority of golf course managers (56 percent) say the uncertainties of COVID-19 have delayed their timetables for updates and renovations. Only a small percentage (16 percent) said COVID had accelerated their schedules. The remaining 29 percent said they did not see any impact at all on their scheduling of work.

Additionally, the survey had strong responses from golf course personnel who said that resource usage, water chief among these, was increasing in importance in their decision-making.

If you’ve been waiting for FIFA to make an official announcement about the cities in the U.S. that will be hosting the World Cup in 2026, you’ve had plenty of practice waiting by now. And unfortunately, it’s looking like that wait is going to be a little longer.

FIFA has announced that, COVID conditions permitting, it expects to make its choices in late 2021.

According to USA TODAY, The United Bid, as the USA/Canada/Mexico World Cup pitch was known, currently lists 23 possible cities as potential hosts. That list will need to be trimmed back to 16: 10 cities in the U.S. and three each in Canada and Mexico. (Canada and Mexico have already put forward three cities each, so at this point, the question becomes which cities in the U.S. will be weeded out. It is unclear whether cities not chosen to host actual games will host other action, such as practices, festivals, etc., or whether they will not host at all).

FIFA’s current plan includes the following timeline (wording taken from FIFA’s announcement, found at this link):

• Following on from the information-exchange phase initiated last year, FIFA and the host associations will organize virtual one-on-one meetings with each stadium to discuss infrastructural aspects from the end of February 2021 onwards.

• From April 2021, FIFA and the host associations will launch targeted virtual discussions with each candidate host city.

• Bearing in mind the constantly changing circumstances with regard to the COVID-19 pandemic, FIFA and the host associations are aiming to start the venue visits in the candidate host cities at the beginning of July 2021. In keeping with FIFA’s policy of following the recommendations of the health authorities in the context of the pandemic, the visits will only take place if the health and safety situation in the host countries allows FIFA to do so.

• Provided the aforementioned venue visits are conducted, FIFA and the host associations aim to have the host cities appointed by the FIFA Council in the last quarter of 2021.

The 2026 World Cup, in addition to being held across three North American countries, will include 48 teams for the first time.

The 2026 World Cup was awarded in 2018.

The game will take place at the site where the iconic 1989 baseball movie was filmed. It will mark the first MLB game in Iowa, to be played in a temporary stadium near the Dyersville farm site. (If any ASBA members helped out with the project, let us know!)

The movie tells the story of Iowa farmer Ray Kinsella (played by Kevin Costner), a husband and father who is tending to his cornfield when he hears a mysterious voice intone, "If you build it, he will come." According to the American Film Institute (AFI), those words are the 39th top film quote of all-time. (It's also often misquoted: If you build it, they will come ... but that's a different story entirely.

All plans for the event remain contingent upon the status of public health in summer 2021. (The advent of a vaccine certainly can’t hurt).

MLB noted, "Upon its initial announcement in 2019, interest in the game was not all that dissimilar to interest in Ray Kinsella’s farm-turned-field. But instead of hundreds of cars lining Lansing Road in Dyersville, Iowa, it was thousands upon thousands of fans tweeting, sharing and otherwise discussing the special event. That interest is bound to be revived now that the game is on again."

Oh, and MLB has provided the following handy-dandy FAQ reference sheet below. Apparently, if you ask them, they will answer.

When and where is the game?
The game is scheduled to take place on Thursday, Aug. 12, and it will air live on FOX.

The game will take place at a newly constructed, 8,000-seat ballpark near the “Field of Dreams” movie site in Dyersville.

Who is playing in MLB at Field of Dreams?
The matchup from the original plans for the 2020 game is back on, as the White Sox and Yankees will face one another in the rescheduled event in 2021.

The home team for next year’s game has not been announced, but in the original plans for the game, the Sox were scheduled to be the “home” team, surrendering a home date at Guaranteed Rate Field for this unique event. Whether home or away, the White Sox are an obvious choice to be included because of their role in the 1989 “Field of Dreams” movie, in which the ghosts of “Shoeless” Joe Jackson and other members of the 1919 Black Sox play on the diamond in the Iowa cornfield.

Will this count as a regular-season game?
Yes.

Will fans be able to attend?
Because of the coronavirus pandemic, it is too soon to say whether fans will be able to attend in 2021, but that is of course the hope. MLB announced that the feasibility of ticket availability will be evaluated in the months ahead.

If they are allowed, people will come. People will most definitely come.

Will the game be played on the same field that was used in the movie?
No. Not only is that field not up to typical Major League dimensions, but too many balls would get lost in the cornfield.

Where will the ballpark be located?
In the field beyond the northern perimeter of the movie field. In a nice homage to the game in the film, a pathway through the cornfield leads to the ballpark. The right-field wall features windows to show the cornfields beyond the ballpark.

How large will the ballpark be?
It is large enough to hold 8,000 fans, but, again, it is still to be determined whether any fans will be able to attend.

What will the field look like?
The design of the park pays homage to Chicago’s Comiskey Park, which was home of the White Sox (and, for a time, “Shoeless” Joe) from 1910-90.

Will the ballpark be used again?
The field will stay intact. Go The Distance Baseball, the company that operates the movie site, will consider other potential uses for it.

Will this be the smallest facility to ever house an MLB regular-season game?
No, BB&T Ballpark at Historic Bowman Field in Williamsport, Pa., where the Little League Classic has been held, is the smallest. It has a capacity of 2,366.

What happens if the game gets rained out?
In the 2020 schedule, an off-day was built in after MLB at Field of Dreams to leave room for a makeup game. In the 2021 MLB regular-season schedule announced in July, the Yankees and White Sox were slated for a three-game series at Guaranteed Rate Field from Aug. 13-15 with an off-day on Aug. 12. So we'll just have to see (and hope for good weather).

Has MLB ever had a regular-season game in Iowa?
No, this will be the first. But the White Sox and Cubs did stage an exhibition in Fort Dodge, Iowa, in 1942, for the opening of Dodger Stadium (no, not that one). Hall of Famers Bob Feller, Cap Anson, Dave Bancroft, Fred Clarke, Red Faber and Dazzy Vance all hail from Iowa. Feller’s father, William, predated the movie idea by building his son a ballfield on the family farm in Van Meter.

Unfortunately, many of those cuts were to sports that use facilities built and renovated by ASBA members.

When sports were singled out for removal, the ones most frequently cut were golf, tennis, swimming & diving, track & field and cross country. Among all these, tennis was the biggest casualty, losing almost 60 programs, according to this article published in September.

Club sports may be able to fill the gap, offering opportunities for competitive play to students. With tennis programs appearing to be first on the chopping block, Tennis on Campus, a national club tennis program offered by the United States Tennis Association, is likely to get busy.

Golf is another frequently targeted program. The National Collegiate Club Golf Association, which runs competitive weekend college golf tournaments for students during the fall and spring semesters (when varsity golf would also normally run), is likely to start seeing interest as well.

Other organizations that sponsor club sports can expect an influx of players. The National Federation of Collegiate Club Sports Leagues, L.L.C. (known as CollClub Sports for short) offers collegiate club programs in baseball (more than 300 teams across three divisions), basketball (men’s and women’s), softball and tackle football.

NIRSA, formerly called the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association, and now known as NIRSA, Leaders in Collegiate Recreation, also sponsors multiple sports programs, including those with national championships (soccer for men and women, flag football for men’s, women’s and co-ed teams; and basketball for men’s and women’s teams;, as well as club basketball, also for men’s and women’s teams). It also works with USTA to produce events for Tennis on Campus.

Running sports, meaning track & field and cross country, are also frequent targets for cuts. Six cross country programs and four track & field programs were named as being cut, with others possibly being impacted by schools eliminating full seasons, or even entirely removing all athletic programs). As a result, it is likely organizations such as the National Intercollegiate Running Club Association (NIRCA), which offers cross country, road and track programs, will see increased activity.

A comprehensive list of cut sports was compiled by HoopDirt.com in late June; it has been kept up sporadically since that time.

The long-range view isn’t hopeful. Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby told the Los Angeles Times that cutting programs for sports that are contested in the Olympics will have repercussions down the line. College sports, after all, are the only feeder system some programs have.

“There are only 17 men’s gymnastics programs in the country,” he said. “If those go away, our Olympic efforts in men’s gymnastics will be devastated. Similarly, with different numbers, the same is true with women’s gymnastics and swimming, wrestling and a whole array of other things like water polo.”

Another downside: When programs are cut, it is an open question as to how much money schools will want to keep in the budget for maintenance of facilities that aren’t actively being used for sanctioned competition. There’s also the potential for D-I-Y repairs, which can have uneven results, depending upon the facility and the type of work it needs.

But the optimistic viewpoint is that administrations will see a demand from students who want the facilities kept up anyway, not just for club sports but for fitness use as well. Additionally, sports facilities that look rough do not provide a good first impression and will not help with recruitment efforts in future years.

Paul Nagle, CTB, of Nagle Athletic Surfaces, Inc., in Syracuse, New York, was re-elected to the position of Track Division President. Randy Resley of Sport Court of the Rockies, LLC, Highlands Ranch, Colorado, was re-elected to the position of Courts and Recreation Division President.

Elected to the position of the President of the Design Professionals Division was Craig Honkomp, PE, PS, LEED AP. Honkomp, of Sportworks Field Design in West Chester, Ohio, who previously represented the Professional Division as a Board of Directors member.

Megan Buczynski, PE, LEED AP, of Activitas, Inc., in Dedham, Massachusetts, is the Association’s new Secretary/Treasurer-Elect. Buczynski most recently served as President of the Design Professionals Division.

Elected to serve as Builder representatives to the Board of Directors were the following:

Fred Kolkmann, CTCB of Fred Kolkmann Tennis & Sport Surfaces, LLC, in Grafton, Wisconsin, who will represent the Tennis Division

Jameson Sheley, CFB-S, CTB, Byrne & Jones Sports Construction, Bridgeton, Missouri, was re-elected to represent the Fields Division.

Elected to serve as Supplier Division representatives were the following:

Chris Sullivan, RLA of Verde Design, Inc., Folsom, California also continues on the Board, representing the Professional Division.

Mark Heinlein, CFB, of The Motz Group, LLC in Cincinnati, Ohio, continues in his position as Chairman of the Board.

Many of the programs and services that had been “housed” under the former Tennis and Courts & Recreation divisions will remain intact, such as the publications and certifications. Tennis Courts: A Construction & Maintenance Manual will stand as a separate publication; and the Certified Tennis Court Builder program will continue as a distinct professional credential.

Consumers visiting the ASBA website will likely find it easier to navigate the site and locate the appropriate resources. For example, someone seeking a builder will choose from one of three landing pages for: Courts, Running Tracks or Sports Fields, all of which are named for the surfaces/venues on which sports are played.

According to ASBA’s Courts & Recreation Division President Randy Resley, of Sport Court of the Rockies, “it was time to combine these two divisions. More often than not, we found ourselves planning separate tracks of programming for members who were interested in both tennis courts and other recreational courts. There is tremendous overlap among the suppliers, designers and builders in these two divisions. By combining them into one Courts division, we’ll be able to streamline our efforts and resources for the benefit of all.”

Tennis Division President Matt Strom of Leslie Coatings added: “With the continued popularity and growth of Pickleball and the recent surge in Tennis this past year due to its social distancing attributes, business is very strong. In most cases, ASBA members are involved in both sports and will be helped by this combining of resources.”

As ASBA’s reach expands more into areas such as volleyball and basketball, this Courts division will have the bandwidth to offer more resources. “A revised and greatly expanded publication addressing hardwood and synthetic surfaces for these “court sports” is underway and is highly anticipated by flooring installers and their customers,” according to Courts & Recreation Director Joe Covington, of Covington Flooring. “It’s time that we joined forces at the division level and utilize the successful model of ASBA’s other divisions and programs. We’re excited about this new structure.”

ASBA will be implementing the change over the coming year, with a combined “Courts” track of programming at its 2021 Technical Meeting being held in Orlando, Florida next December 3-6, 2021. In the meantime, committees and task forces will be working toward that end.

The Game Changer Awards program allowed attendees in the ASBA’s Virtual Exhibit Halls to learn about new technology and products on the market. Attendees were able to vote for those products they thought best exemplified excellence and innovation in the industry.

A few points of interest, according to the NCAA, were as follows:

• The NCAA received more than 3,000 bid submissions from NCAA member schools, conferences, sports commissions and cities vying to host predetermined rounds for 86 of the NCAA’s 90 championships.
• Forty-three states plus the District of Columbia were selected to host at least one NCAA championship event, with California garnering the most, with 34. Texas was second with 30, while North Carolina totaled 28, followed by Pennsylvania with 27 and Ohio with 25. 
• This was the first time the site selection process has been held since the NCAA changed its policy preventing states with legal wagering based on single-game betting from hosting its championships. Therefore, the state of Nevada will host a predetermined NCAA championship for the first time since 1991.
• Another highlight of the site selection is the announcement of the 2025 and 2026 Division I Women’s Final Fours. Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida, will serve as the site in 2025, while Talking Stick Resort Arena in Phoenix will host in 2026. Tampa Bay will host the Women’s Final Four for a record fourth time, while Phoenix will host its first.
• The state of Arizona will play host to the Women’s Final Four for the first time when Phoenix hosts in 2026.
• Another notable highlight of the bid selection process has the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida, with its 100-court facility, serving as the venue for all six tennis championships in 2023. It will mark the first time in NCAA history that men’s and women’s championships in all three divisions of the same sport are held at the same time in the same venue.
• In addition, Division II will host a basketball festival in 2026 with both its men’s and women’s Elite Eights at the UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse in Pittsburgh. In addition, Division II will continue to host its other National Championships Festivals, as the 2022 fall festival will be held in Seattle, with the 2024 spring festival in Orlando and the 2025 winter festival in Indianapolis.
• In Division III, the Stagg Bowl, Division III’s football championship game, will be hosted in 2022 at Navy-Marine Corps Stadium on the campus of the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, for the first time in history. Then, in 2023, the Stagg Bowl will return to Salem Stadium in Salem, Virginia, for the first time since 2017, the last of 25 straight championship games played in that venue.

Other highlights of the championship sites include:

• The University of Dayton will continue to host the NCAA First Four through at least 2026.
• Kansas City, Missouri, has hosted more NCAA men’s basketball tournament games than any other city, with 134. That total will increase, as the T-Mobile Center will host a 2023 Division I men’s basketball regional.
• The new Climate Pledge Arena in the Seattle Center in Seattle will be a 2023 regional site for Division I women’s basketball and a 2025 first- and second-round site for Division I men’s basketball.
• Division I women’s basketball is undergoing a format change and identified eight host cities that will serve as hosts for the regional rounds from 2023 to 2026. Beginning in 2023, regional play will be held at two sites per year, with eight teams competing at each site.
• The National Collegiate Beach Volleyball Championship will continue to be held at Gulf Beach Place in Gulf Shores, Alabama, in 2023 and 2024 before moving locations for the first time. In 2025 and 2026, the Huntington Beach Pier in Huntington Beach, California, will be the championship location. The event has been held in Gulf Shores since its inception in 2016.
• In 2025 and 2026, Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, will host the Divisions I, II and III Men’s Lacrosse Championships, in addition to the Division I Women’s Lacrosse Championship, on the same weekend.
• The 2024 Division I Men’s Soccer Championship will be held in Sacramento, California, at the new Sacramento Republic FC Stadium.
• In 2025, the Division I Wrestling Championships are headed to Philadelphia for the second time.

As a result, for the first time in 50 years, NFHS did not release its survey. What it did do, however, was share the following insights about fall sports (the only ones unaffected by COVID):

Girls’ volleyball continued its tremendous growth last fall, increasing by 9,751 participants for a total of 462,559. In the past 10 years, the sport has added 60,000 participants and has passed basketball as the No. 2 sport for girls behind track and field.

Volleyball is played on three surfaces (indoor, grass and sand) and the NFHS tracks indoor and beach. The growth figures are for indoor volleyball (which plays in the fall), which is good news for ASBA’s Courts & Recreation Division, as well as for its Supplier Division.

11-player football, which has been declining in participation for the past three years, according to NFHS, posted its smallest drop to date – just under 2,500 students. (To put that into perspective, the three previous annual drops had been 23,311, 20,540 and 30,829). A four-figure drop, therefore, is a significant improvement.

“These numbers suggest to us that parents are appreciative of the risk minimization efforts that have been put in place,” said Dr. Karissa Niehoff, NFHS executive director. “Every state has enacted rules that limit the amount of contact before the season and during practice, and every state has established concussion protocols and laws. The continued enthusiasm for football has been evident this fall – even amid the COVID-19 pandemic. State associations have worked with government, education and health leaders to do everything possible to offer the sport at some time during the 2020-21 season.”

The NFHS notes that a total of 34 states is conducting football this fall. Some other states have shifted their football season, along with several other sports, including soccer, to spring. In addition, some states have made format or location changes to try to create a more healthful environment; for example, Vermont has shifted to playing 7-on-7 football and outdoor volleyball.

Outdoor volleyball could lend itself to the grass game – something that would be good news for the Fields Division – however, with more demands on fields because of spring football, as well as a host of other traditional spring sports – and any sports moved to spring – schools may find themselves hard-pressed to keep up with the demands for practice and competition space.

It is also likely that students themselves will take the initiative and try new sports that do not involve as much physical contact. Outdoor sports, such as fishing and archery may become more popular. Tennis, having been viewed as a healthy social distancing option, could also spike in popularity, even if schools do not offer play. Esports, which has continued to grow wildly, and which now is an avenue for college scholarships, is also likely to continue its growth trajectory.

“Though a complete participation report for 2019-20 will not be available due to the loss of spring sports,” concludes Dr. Niehoff, “totals on more fall and winter sports from 2019-20 will be formulated in the coming weeks. Judging from the early returns, it appears the past year’s participation numbers would have started the NFHS on a new streak of record participation if spring sports had not been cancelled.”

One of the side effects of quarantine life has been the influx of people going outdoors for exercise, including taking up (or returning to) golf. It could lead to more golf course improvement projects, lending an extra level of importance on the growth of the game.

According to the National Golf Foundation, the number of rounds played increased 13.9% nationally in June, a continuation of the recent surge in golf participation amid quarantine. This rise translates to approximately 7 million or 8 million more rounds than June of 2019.

The NGF saw a 6.2% bump in rounds played in May. (More than half of U.S. golf courses were closed in late March and throughout April, so this is welcome news).

And there’s even more good news for golf-related business. U.S. sales of golf equipment jumped a mind-blowing 51% in June alone. This follows the 22% growth recorded in May.

Sales of a full set of golf clubs rose by 68 percent in June, and golf balls were up 45 percent a trend that is tied to new, entry-level players, said Matt Powell, the NPD Group’s sports industry advisor. Glove sales increased by 51 percent for the month, and tees grew by 49 percent.

Even more good news: The National Golf Foundation is projecting a 20% increase in participation of juniors (as well as new or returning golfers).

Summer is the traditional time for golf nationwide; approximately half of annual rounds are played from May through August, so a continued surge throughout the summer months will help the industry fully recoup its earlier losses.

And U.S. sales of golf equipment jumped 51 percent. Even more encouraging, according to Sporting Goods Business, sales outside of resort locations remain very strong as well.

Sales of a full set of golf clubs rose by 68 percent in June, and golf balls were up 45 percent a trend that Powell suggested is tied to new, entry-level players. Glove sales increased by 51 percent for the month, and tees grew by 49 percent.

Training aids – specifically golf nets and screens, as well as swinging and putting mats – is an area of the market that continues to perform well. These products saw their fastest sales growth in March and April, up more than 140 percent. Sales grew 78 percent in June.

Distance Insights Report

Meanwhile, the USGA and the R&A have put work on their Distance Insights Report on hold for the duration of the pandemic. The report, which in 2019, showed a distinct increase in hitting distances across a period of 100 years, had created great cause for concern in both organizations, including the following:

• The inherent strategic challenge presented by many golf courses can be compromised, especially when those courses have not or cannot become long enough to keep up with increases in the hitting distances of the golfers who play from their longest tees. This can lead to a risk of many courses becoming less challenging, or obsolete.
• Increased hitting distance can begin to undermine the core principle that the challenge of golf is about needing to demonstrate a broad range of skills to be successful.
• If courses continue to lengthen, it is at odds with growing societal concerns about the use of water, chemicals and other resources
• Longer distances and courses, longer tees and longer times to play are taking golf in the wrong direction and are not necessary for a challenging, enjoyable and sustainable game.
• A concern has been identified that many recreational golfers are playing from longer tees than is necessary relative to their hitting distances, and, in particular that the forward tees on many golf courses are very long for many of the golfers who play from them.

Stronger players and better equipment had factored into the distances; however, it was also believed too much emphasis was being placed on the distance aspect of the game, which could be discouraging to amateurs and juniors.

“This is not about the last few years or the next few years but rather about the long-term future of the game,” said Mike Davis, chief executive officer of the USGA. “This report clearly shows a consistent increase in hitting distance and golf course lengths over the last 100-plus years. These increases have had a profound impact on costs to build, modify and operate golf courses and they have impacted golfers at all levels. We believe this problem will continue unless this cycle is brought to an end. With collaboration from the entire golf community, we have an opportunity to stem this tide and help ensure golf remains sustainable and enjoyable for generations to come.”

The USGA and the R&A – which had expected to have further conclusions and recommendations out this summer – are now targeting March 2021 for the release of equipment research topics. In the interim, the two groups will continue to monitor the effects of distance on the game.

The discipline was last seen in the Olympics in 1924, meaning that by the time it makes it back to the rings (if it does), nearly 100 years will have passed.

World Athletics says that it’s using the COVID time to focus on the many athletes who have turned to running rather than team sports.

"We know that in the short term, this will initially be restricted by the social distancing guidelines the world is under; on the other hand, the vital importance of daily exercise in maintaining fitness and health during this time has resulted in many people taking up walking and running and playing simple games involving running, jumping and throwing with their families.”

The U.S. already has a deep bench of potential Olympians – and medalists – since the sport is already heavily contested. At the high school level, it has consistently ranked in the top 10 most popular boys’ and girls’ sports, according to the National Federation of State High School Associations. At the college level, cross country is second only to basketball in number of school teams nationwide. In 2017, Business Insider noted, “Cross country, thanks to being a sport that doesn't require a stadium or arena, has small teams, uses minimal equipment, and can be played by both men and women, is a close second with 2,065 NCAA teams.”

The fact that athletes can train on their own, even if colleges and high schools are not offering in-person classes, could work in the sport’s favor, as well as the country’s.

Something that might not play in cross country’s favor, however, is the season. Cross country is traditionally a cold-weather sport in the U.S. but when being contested in the Olympics between 1912 and 1924, it was offered in the summer along with other running events. And unfortunately, during the 1924 Olympics in Paris, most of the athletes running quit the race because of extreme heat. The discipline was then dropped.

World Athletics would like to bring back cross country but originally said it would like to see it held during the Winter Olympics. But the Olympic Charter notes that the only sports that can take place in the Winter Olympics are those held on ice or snow.

If cross country is able to make a return, it could be seen as soon as the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris and the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

The data comes from the COVID-19 Industry Impact Report for June 2020 compiled by the Sports & Fitness Industry Association.

Among the findings: 37% think youth sports will return in 2021 or later, and the two top categories to return to pre-COVID health first will be individual sports (72%) and outdoor sports (66%). Worth noting: sales of fishing tackle and bicycles are exponentially higher than this time last year.

Overall, the survey said that industry members believe that a rebound from the effects of COVID-19 is going to happen – but that it will take time and that it will depend upon certain factors. A full 72% of companies noted they believed they would return to some semblance of pre-COVID-19 – but that they projected this would happen in 2021 or later, which was a 12-percentage-point increase over the last time they were surveyed (in May).

Looking ahead, it’s essential to know what organizations have to say about what they think WOULD help move the needle in participation in youth sports and drive them back to normal (or a semblance of normal). According to the survey, the following reports were given. Note: The largest two percentages always fell into determining something as an “absolutely essential” or “very important” priority, while other responses (of average importance, somewhat of little importance, and no importance at all) received very little endorsement and are not mentioned here.

• Decrease in Local COVID-19 Cases: The largest percentage (42%) said it was absolutely essential and 40% said it was very important.
• Availability of a Vaccine: 41% absolutely essential, 32% very important
• Response to a Possible Second Wave of an Outbreak: 35% absolutely essential, 40% very important
• CDC or Governmental Approval: 35% absolutely essential, 38% very important
• Widespread COVID Testing: 33% absolutely essential, 35% very important
• Opening of Elementary and Secondary Schools 31% absolutely essential, 39% very important

Other safeguards, such as Temperature and Symptoms Checks, and Widespread Antibody Testing, were seen as significantly less important.

Of interest: the survey noted that in May, only 28% said the development of a vaccine was absolutely essential to youth sports returning; by June, that percentage had skyrocketed to 41. The translation for that, according to SGB Media, was, “Return to play expectations were more optimistic in May but dropped in June as many states saw surges of the virus after reopening too quickly.”

Another aspect of the study included gyms, fitness centers and boutique fitness facilities. For the purposes of the sports event industry, it is essential to remember that these venues are typically the ones that host indoor events such as racquetball and squash tournaments, smaller functional fitness events and similar competitions.

A total of 91% those surveyed believed that in order for such facilities to reopen, smart precautions need to be taken, meaning masks needed to be required. Another 88% thought that antibacterial wipes should be required, and 90% thought the spacing out of equipment was a factor. 71% thought that having a vaccine available was very important in allowing such venues reopen and host again.

Unfortunately, gyms are one of the hardest-hit sectors, according to SGB Media, and the impact upon them continues to be felt. According to a survey from TD Ameritrade, 59 percent of Americans don’t plan to renew their gym memberships after the COVID-19 pandemic is over. As reported by CNBC, the survey showed 56 percent of those surveyed indicated the pandemic helped them find “more affordable” ways to get exercise and live a healthier lifestyle.

The SFIA noted there have been distinct differences in the answers given by respondents between the last survey (May) and this one (June). In May, 76% of respondents said they thought that gyms, health clubs and boutique fitness centers would return in the summer, while 80% believed that organized youth sports would return by September or October. As the virus continues to impact sports, expectations are more realistic.

FIFA and U.S. Soccer will hold virtual one-on-one sessions with each candidate host city after that, in order to gain more specific information on each facility and on the city as a whole. The FIFA World Cup 2026™, which will be hosted across Canada, Mexico and the United States, will be the first 48-team FIFA World Cup in history.

Under normal circumstances, the selection process would be taking place in person and in fact, it had begun earlier in 2020. Canada and Mexico already held workshops for candidate cities (Edmonton, Montreal and Toronto and Guadalajara, Mexico City and Monterrey, respectively). The July 7 event was set for March; however, when COVID-19 intervened, all in-person visits were cancelled.

Last week, FIFA formally announced Australia and New Zealand as the hosts of the 2023 Women’s World Cup.

But something else that has gone on despite the pandemic, despite all other precautions being taken, is Russian Slap Fighting, the sport where grown men take turns slapping one another across the face until one of them fouls out or passes out. Yes, it's a contact sport. Yes, it's a spectator sport. And yes, it's drawing the crowds (and no, they're not doing the social distance thing).

It’s as strange and testosterone-fueled as it sounds. (Need to see it? Here’s a video link link). And by the way, there are plenty of other videos on YouTube, some narrated in English by a spectacularly profane announcer who uses the handle of Penguinz0. He’s an admirer, not a slapper, but he can still explain what’s going on.

The contestants in a slap fighting contest wear no special equipment – no gloves and no helmets (obviously). To maintain balance after being slapped, competitors hold on to a stand (some sturdier than others) that has been placed between them – although many require assistance to stay on their feet after being struck.

And there are rules, at least in the Russian form of the sport. Only the upper part of the palm can be used to strike only the cheek, without touching the jaw, temple or ear of the opponent – if you hit those, it’s a foul. Evading the slap (including merely flinching to one side) is also a foul. So is using any part of your hand other than the upper part of the palm. If a competitor commits two fouls, he loses the match.

Each man gets five slaps at his opponent. Assuming there are no fouls, a judge decides who fared better, and the winner proceeds to the next round. Occasionally, both contestants split the prize if neither has committed a foul and both have done well.

And yes, medics are on standby – and they are often needed to clean up wounds, revive unconscious patients and make the decision that someone has sustained an injury too severe to allow them to continue (no matter what the contestant might think).

“Anyone who is willing to take part can do so, but the person must understand that it is not fun, it is fun on the one hand, but it carries a high risk to life, risk of getting injured,” explained competition owner, Denis Kiyutsin, in an interview with a news program. “We explain it to everybody, we get everybody together, to explain the rules, what can and cannot be done, like a short briefing, there is at least one judge who is watching that the rules are followed, because people sometimes are cheating, deliberately breaking some rules, but this can lead to serious traumas with their opponent. Every person, by all means, should be aware that it is dangerous that there is risk to life, so every person signs an acknowledgment that he is aware of this,”

Oh, and by the way, this also takes place in the U.S.; one popular YouTube video shows a competition held in Branson, Missouri, where two individuals, known as Hillbilly Hippie (from Mountain Home, Arkansas) and Crazy Hawaiian (who hails from the islands of his namesake), went head to head for nearly 15 minutes before Hillbilly became too concussed to continue. Slapping contests can be standalone events; in Russia, they began as an add-on to the weekend-long Siberian Power Show—which included bodybuilding, powerlifting, dance offs and a dumpling eating contest. 

“There have always been interesting fistfights in Russia. It happened spontaneously and was interesting. We were sitting and thinking how to diversify our (our event), we are looking at how to make sport more interesting, we have sports zones, and entertainment zones and slap competitions started with a spontaneous idea, why not try?” said Kiyutsin.

The undisputed superstar of Russian slapping is Vasily Pelmen who goes by the remarkable nickname of Dumpling. The mountain of a guy knocking his opponents out with one slap that you at the beginning of this blog? Yeah, that’s Dumpling.

Whether the sport catches on in the U.S. as anything more than a novelty remains to be seen. And it’s unlikely that it’ll ever need special facilities or equipment (other than perhaps punching bags or similar items). The sport’s sponsors tend to be dietary supplements and the commercials (you’ll see one in the first clip) show musclebound weightlifters.

But as mentioned previously, it’s one sport that, in Russia, at least, seems to have a blatant disregard for the pandemic.

“Sports are closed everywhere else,” says Penguinz0, “but in Russia, they’re still slapping each other around. The virus is probably afraid of slap fighting.”

What we’ve seen so far, though has been a new industry springing up to keep people safe as they emerge from quarantine. And in short, it’s a Shark Tank-style wonder, with some incredibly creative examples of adaptive reuse.

And, when you think about it, it’s pretty brilliant. Right now, as parts of the U.S. try to restart sports, conditions are far from hospitable. In addition to having some record-breaking cold temperatures for May, many areas are still living under social distancing guidelines.

The plastic pods can hold from one to six people (you choose the size), creating a true “plastic bubble” for those who want to avoid others. (This article from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch noted that parents were using them for one of the area’s first youth baseball events in quite some time). Of course, the pods are made of 100 percent plastic so it’s likely they will be useful during cool or rainy times – but not as the weather heats up.

So what else is happening to keep people safe as they emerge from quarantine? Several concepts – with more hitting the market all the time, including…

Drones Being Used to Sanitize Stadiums: It’s a new take on the old crop duster idea. According to an article in Venues Now, U.S. companies including Rantizo Inc. of Iowa City, Iowa, OMI Environmental Solutions of Belle Chasse, Louisiana, and EagleHawk of Buffalo, New York, are offering amphitheaters, arenas, stadiums and other facilities the opportunity to have airborne sprayer drones disinfect and sanitize their facilities.  

All three use sprayed disinfectants and are marketing drones’ ability to sanitize seating areas and other spaces quickly and safely. In fact, work is already in place with a number of venues. Rantizo recently conducted tests at Principal Park, the Des Moines home of the Triple A Pacific Coast League’s Iowa Cubs, and EagleHawk has done the same at Sahlen Field, where the Buffalo Bisons of the Triple-A International League play. 

All three companies say the drones save on labor costs since it removes the need for individuals to go into stadiums and hose down seats with disinfectants. And for jobs that require a quick turnaround, more drones can be employed, getting the venue done in a shorter time.

New Computer Modeling to Show Where Spectators Can be Placed: Maybe you’re in an area where spectators are allowed but only if they sit certain distances away from one another. The Stadium Business noted that 3D Digital Venue has launched a new service to create virtual reconstructions and perform different types of simulations, showing where spectators can sit, given a stadium’s specific configuration.

Putting Fans in the Stands, Even if They Can’t Be There: Of course, if local ordinances are still forbidding mass gatherings completely, there's a way to put fans in the stands, sort of. In Germany, one soccer fan has developed an app that, for a fee, allow fans to upload an image of themselves that will be printed out and placed in the stands to root for their teams. It costs the equivalent of $20, with a portion of the fee going to COVID-19 relief.

While we don't yet know how long quarantine and social distancing restrictions will be in effect, it's interesting to imagine what ASBA's trade show might look like if these products are still on the market and still in demand.

According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, CONCACAF president Victor Montagliani, who also serves as vice-chair of North America’s 2026 men’s World Cup organizing committee, said that the pandemic’s outbreak has played havoc with the original timeline for picking the tournament’s host venues. A mid-March meeting in Dallas of representatives from the 17 competing U.S. cities was cancelled and has not yet been rescheduled. Similar meetings in Mexico and Canada were also cancelled.

FIFA officials were scheduled to perform site inspections on potential venues for practices and competitions in March and April. Those also have been cancelled. It is possible that the dates for a projected second round of tours, in October and November, might be used instead for the original site inspections – but only if the virus is sufficiently under control.

Either way, the announcement will not arrive in early 2021, as it was supposed to.

It now appears a decision would likely be made in the summer or fall of 2021, which is five years out from the World Cup.

All of that, however, is a remote concern at the moment, when cities are scrambling simply to recoup losses from cancelled sports events and conventions that were to take place this spring and summer.

A total of 23 cities across the United States and Mexico are bidding to host games in the 2026 World Cup. Here are the cities in alphabetical order and their stadiums:

The New Track Construction Manual Is Available Now: ASBA has published its new edition of Running Tracks: A Construction & Maintenance Manual.  The book is available in hard copy here and as a downloadable pdf here. Why do you need this new edition? Because it contains all-new information, including a chapter on indoor track and field facilities. One specific sport that was seeing enormous upticks of interest (prior to everything grinding to a halt) was sport climbing, which makes its medal debut at the summer Olympics next year. The sport has already established a place for itself on the international level in the World Games and interest continues to grow. Stateside, the sport is already seeing huge growth. In fact, to hear industry experts talk about it, it’s the darling of the Millennial demographic.

According to the most recent State of Climbing report from the American Alpine Club, that age group is not only trying out the sport, but they’re buying into it and prior to COVID-19, was taking out membership in the growing number of rock-climbing gyms around the nation. Also seemingly showing interest in climbing are functional fitness aficionados (i.e. the CrossFit contingent).

And climbing is social media-friendly, something else that appeals to Millennials. According to The Cut, “bouldering is very Instagrammable — the 2.7 million Instagram posts currently tagged #bouldering depict walls covered in bright, rainbow-colored lumps, and bodies which look inherently athletic, even virtuous, for attempting to navigate them.”

Back in the fall, The New York Times, which did an in-depth study of climbing among Millennials, noted, “Young professionals flock to [rock climbing gyms] after work because the exercise is intense, unstructured and sociable; the gyms may be one of the last urban locales where talking to strangers is encouraged."

And there's still going to be plenty of exposure for the sport, despite the stay-at-home restrictions. There are movies about climbing as well as multiple videos online about the sport, as well as at-home workouts to help individuals hone their strength in lieu of actually climbing -- meaning it's likely the interest will stay strong.

Many states have large population centers but still lack climbing gyms. And the success of the gyms in places without as many areas to climb actual rock formations (in other words, those not in mountainous or hilly areas but in the flatlands) has proven that people don’t need to be training for actual outdoor climbing in order to want to buy into this as a form of fitness. So it may be that sports builders serving indoor facilities as well as manufacturers of climbing walls will see an uptick once restrictions loosen.

In its 2018 Industry Report, the Climbing Wall Association projected revenue growth percentages well into the double digits for both 2019 and 2020, with the indoor climbing industry poised to break the billion-dollar mark in 2021. Gym operators were reporting strong growth in both membership and program offerings. Obviously, this was before the advent of COVID-19 and its restrictions – but it is likely business trends will begin to resume when the fitness economy opens back up.

So according to the experts, we can expect to see a demand for climbing gyms – or even just climbing walls in existing gyms – skyrocket when gyms reopen. And here too, there could be advantages. It may be that when facilities do start operating again, they may be limited to a lower capacity in order to allow individuals to keep a healthful distance from one another. By getting individuals to make appointments for use of both the wall and a belayer, the chance of overcrowding would be decreased – and an additional revenue stream could be realized.

Despite the fact that a recent study showed that outdoor recreation in the U.S. was down markedly in 2018, many individuals and families are using their quarantine time to explore the great outdoors. In fact, early observations show walking paths, local fishing holes, playgrounds, hiking trails and parks are all seeing an unprecedented uptick in visitors.

Ultimately, that has driven an awareness an awareness of municipal facilities, including local tennis and pickleball courts, basketball courts, volleyball courts (sand and regular) – and plenty of others.

On March 18, the National Park Service announced it would be waiving entrance fees indefinitely (however, according  to SGB Media, that decision came one day after the agency closed several large parks – including Yosemite, Grand Canyon, Everglades, Sequoia, Kings Canyon, Point Reyes the Washington Memorial and the Statue of Liberty – following overcrowding concerns).

We actually already have early indications a trend toward the outdoors was beginning just prior to COVID-19. Georgia became the fifth state to partner with FLW and The Bass Federation (TBF) in offering bass fishing as a sanctioned varsity sport. The change, reported by the Georgia High School Association (GHSA), will go into effect for the 2020-2021 school year.

Another activity seeing a strong uptick is running. Outside Online noted, “As a number of people have already observed in the ominously mono-themed Twittersphere, running is the optimal sport for a time when everyone is encouraged to avoid crowded, enclosed spaces whenever possible.”

And with more people discovering running, it’s likely there will be more teens looking into track & field when quarantine measures are over and students return to school.

All of this activity has the potential to drive an uptick in the need to keep facilities. And while we have no way of knowing when the threat of the virus will pass, we know that China has begun opening some of its tourist attractions, shuttered since January 24. A timeline of the emergence of the virus in China, and its spread across the globe, can be found here. However, those seeking to establish a parallel timeline need to understand that a study published in March indicated that if Chinese authorities had acted three weeks earlier than they did, the number of coronavirus cases could have been reduced by 95 percent and the geographic spread of the virus limited. The timeline clearly demonstrates that China's cover-up and the delay in serious measures to contain the virus lasted about three weeks.

Ultimately, however, the country will emerge from the need for social distancing and from self-isolation and when it does, it will need sports more than ever – not just to watch but to participate in. And that will help drive economic recovery for our industry, as well as others.

The quadrennial World Games, the multi-sport event similar to the Olympics, are scheduled to come to Birmingham, Alabama, from July 15-25, 2021.

The problem: The Olympics were supposed to be held from July 25-August 9 of this year – and it’s possible – if not downright likely – that the new dates for the Summer Games in Tokyo, once they’re rescheduled for next summer, will conflict.

The World Games isn’t going to be something easily dismissed. It’s a big event. Need proof of how big the numbers are? The Games will celebrate their 40^th anniversary in 2021 (they began in 1981). Here is a by-the-numbers breakdown of the most recent games, held in Wroclaw, Poland:

240,000: The number of people present in the Wroclaw, who watched the Games

24: Number of venues

130: The number of countries receiving coverage of the Games (the Games were also carried 24/7 on the Olympic Channel)

1,600: How many volunteers it took to put on the Games

861: The number of media representatives (from 50 countries)

In Birmingham, officials are predicting the following numbers:

100-plus: Number of countries that will be represented by those athletes

While the World Games are comparable to the Olympics in that they are an international multi-sport phenomenon, they are, in fact, markedly different.

While Birmingham is already active on the sports hosting scene, the World Games is expected to create a major impression on the city. While the Games are anticipated to cost $50 million, most of that funding will come from corporate sponsors. The payoff, though, is immense: a planned $256 million in economic impact.

The legacy of the Games is profound. After 2009, when Kaohsiung (southeast of Chinese Taipei) hosted, the logo of The World Games 2009 became the official city logo and Kaohsiung has gone on to host several other major sporting events, such as competitions in Sumo and Dance Sport.

The 2021 World Games will also mark the first time the event has been in the United States since, oddly, 40 years ago – when the first World Games ever took place, and were hosted in Santa Clara, California.

But what impact the rescheduling of the Olympics will have on the World Games is not yet known. The competition schedule on the World Games website, in which a program of events would be listed, stands blank. Will the World Games be forced to reschedule in order to accommodate the Olympics? The sports world will just have to wait to find out.

Some sectors of the sports economy, however, are doing their best to weather the storm. Some you might expect and others, not so much:

Professional bull riding is thriving. And despite being held in empty (or nearly empty) arenas, the extreme sport/rodeo hybrid is providing a welcome adrenaline rush. It’s no bull. Last weekend, the Professional Bull Riders (PBR) brought their show to Duluth, Georgia’s Infinity Energy Center. There were no spectators, but there were camera crews. The CBS Sports Network broadcast the action nationwide – where it was gobbled up by a sports-starved public.

“We are so proud of our partnership with CBS,” PBR CEO Sean Gleason said in a statement. “They’ve been a great and nimble partner in bringing more PBR action to fans this weekend.

Virtual Events: Already having established a firm footing in the marketplace, virtual events have become a force to be reckoned with, meaning a D-I-Y event might help salvage at least a portion of the bottom line for event directors in the era of social distancing. As an example, USA Triathlon’s Time to Tri Virtual Triathlon is an active program that preexisted the coronavirus and has already seen excellent participation. It is free for individuals to participate and to register and upload their results; however, those who choose to make a $35 donation to the USA Triathlon Foundation will receive a finisher’s package that will include a finisher’s medal and a race T-shirt with 100 percent of the proceeds being directed to the Foundation. 

Another iteration of the virtual event was discussed by Chad Hoover of Kayak Bass Fishing. Because kayaks lack a live well, it is up to the angler to take a photo of his or her catch on the bump board and send the photo to tournament judges. Count on other fishing events to take similar steps if coronavirus continues to force cancellations into the summer.

Online Gaming: Okay, everyone loved hearing about the big numbers the Fortnite World Cup Finals racked up when they were held at the grounds of the U.S. Open in New York. For now, though, esports events that take place online are being favored. Activision’s Call of Duty League switched its live Home Series events to an online format only – and it’s hardly the only event to do so.

Online events have long been in use for many mind sports such as chess, bridge, Sudoku and match poker; expect these to continue in popularity.

Streamed Events: If events are still held and no crowds are allowed in, expect streaming to become even more popular. Jeremy Waller, Vice President of Business Development for Sports Channel Media and YourGameCam, stated his company has already seen increased inquiries from high schools about the potential for streaming.

“Live streaming is, in fact, already being leveraged further specifically because of the health risks surrounding large crowds,” he adds.

Remote Participation: In some cases, such as with performance sports, athletes may find it possible to create a recording of themselves and submit it to judges as part of a remote event.

Life Goes On: Some events are still being held. The Iditarod, unarguably Alaska's signature event, went on with the show. And, says Sports Illustrated, The NFL draft will no longer be held in Las Vegas over growing concern regarding the coronavirus outbreak and consultation with medical experts, according to multiple reports. The league is still planning to proceed as scheduled from April 23-25 but will make modifications to how the process will be conducted and broadcast.

While much has changed, the essential point is that all changes are temporary and that when the threat is contained, the country will need its sports as much as, if not more than, ever before.

And the small town (population 4,220) of Dyersville is already gearing up for what is likely to be its biggest year since the movie came out in 1989.

The game itself will involve the New York Yankees and the Chicago White Sox, and will be played on August 13, 2020. And it’s easy to believe the 8,000 seats in the stadium are going to be in high demand. Reports indicate the Dyersville Chamber of Commerce has been getting nonstop calls about the game.

Construction of the temporary ballpark on the “Field of Dreams” site was slated to begin in mid-August, KCRG reports. And members of the Sports Turf Managers Association (STMA) are involved.

Adjacent to the original Field of Dreams, a new stadium and playing surface will be constructed from scratch to ensure MLB standards are met. In total, 17 acres of the cornfield will require grading to accommodate the infrastructure. The field will be a sand-based natural grass system with a complete underdrain system. A fully automatic irrigation system will also be installed to manage the bluegrass sodded field. 

BrightView will oversee the installation of new foul poles, bullpens, a batter’s eye and backstop net while BaAm will build the temporary seating, locker rooms, media and press box areas in conjunction with Populous.  The majority of the sitework and subbase system will be completed this fall. In the spring of 2020, USGA modified rootzone materials and sod will be added with an estimated completion date of mid-July.  Following the historic contest, the field will remain with fencing included.
 
Construction and maintenance of the field as well as site grading will be overseen by BrightView, the nation’s leading landscape services company and Major League Baseball’s sports turf consultant.  Each BrightView employee on the project is an STMA member. Nearly a dozen members of STMA will form the team responsible for ensuring the field upholds the standards of a typical MLB venue on game night.

Next year’s Field of Dreams game is the latest venture between BrightView and MLB. BrightView’s’ team maintained and prepared the playing surface for the London Series between the Yankees and Red Sox earlier this season. 

Well…not quite.

Yes, the game was quite a hit – but then again, it’s (ahem) a whole new ballgame over there. And the novelty factor was a big help. According to the Associated Press, 70 percent of the tickets for the Yankees-Red Sox games were sold in Britain, with the remaining 30 percent sold in the United States. Red Sox season-ticket holders purchased an average of 5,831 seats per game and Yankees fans picked up 4,752 tickets during the presale.

All pretty awesome, but what does it mean?

Maybe…not much. Wikipedia tells us baseball is a minor sport in England, with about only 3,000 participants. Additionally, that source notes, “the sport is governed by the British Baseball Federation, which runs a multi-tier national league. The national team has taken part in international competitions. There are also independent regional leagues, and about 20 universities field teams. The sole purpose-built facility in the UK is at Farnham Common, Buckinghamshire. There is also a youth baseball academy.”

In fact, the biggest impediment to the sport’s growth in England (other than a widespread lack of interest in the game, since it doesn’t receive much coverage) seems to be a lack of facilities. And that might keep exhibition games from the MLB to a minimum.

When asked why he did not think the game had a future abroad, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred cited as one reason the challenge of finding stadiums that would work for baseball without having heavy alterations or reconstruction. “Playing in Europe presents some challenges that the NFL doesn’t have,’’ he said – a reference to the fact that NFL games have been contested in England. “It’s a lot easier for them to play inside soccer stadiums. It’s virtually impossible for us.’’

The bat and ball sport of cricket is far more popular in England than baseball; in fact, the only other sport comparable to baseball in terms of rules is a game known as “rounders,” which is popular among schoolchildren (particularly girls), although it is contested on the international level.

The fact that baseball (and softball for that matter) were picked up for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo and dropped from the 2024 Games in Paris also will not do much to light a fire in the hearts of the world. But it’s likely the sports will be picked up for the 2028 Games in Los Angeles. Whether the sports will be featured in Olympics beyond that point is unknown and will depend upon the host city’s preferences. While it’s far too early for a host to be picked for 2032, for example, a multitude of cities threw their hats into the ring already; a list of prospective hosts can be found here.

MLB, for its part, seems to be setting its sights on developing the sport in other countries. According to Baseball America, MLB, having worked hard to develop a following in China, has now set its sights on India.

Jim Small, MLB senior vice president of international business, believes the popularity of cricket is a point that will play in baseball’s favor. In addition, he notes, among the potential market of a population of more than 1 billion people, 90 percent have a connected device in their hands. The strong possibility that a player could make the major leagues means that the population could stream games – and find them understandable and relatable.

“There are very few sports played above the waist,” Small told Baseball America. “And when we go and see the people that we’re supporting in baseball there, we see tremendous athletes who can throw and catch and hit. They may not have played a lot of baseball. They may have used the wrong foot to touch the base when they turn a double play, but they have the ability to throw a laser beam to first base. And that’s a really attractive thing.”

Side note: Trying to tell a lifelong cricket player they’re using the wrong foot to touch the base in a strange new game is easier said than done – and could come off very wrong. But if baseball can manage to take off in India, it could continue its growth as MLB intends.
